Employee Reskilling / Upskilling

Organizations know that employee turnover can affect the company is many negative ways. When companies hire employees, they are investing on employees, and not only their remuneration. They also invest in onboarding, training, reskilling/upskilling. Reskilling/upskilling employees can increase retention among employees and increase productivity for the company.

As per (Li, 2022) companies and individuals alike must make a commitment to upskilling and reskilling, and they must see career development as an essential aspect of the workforce of the future. It is essential that major activities be made to ensure that learning opportunities, like reskilling and upskilling, are affordable, available, and accessible to the workforce.

The primary goal of upskilling and reskilling employees is to increase their long-term cost-effectiveness and competitiveness. However, businesses cannot ignore the HRDF initiatives or the need for both human and technical skills. Among them is the creation of a digital culture that supports local experts through appropriate training and development. (Wahab, 2021)

In response to changing job requirements and industry changes, organizations utilize employee upskilling and reskilling as strategies to improve the skills and capabilities of their workforce. Despite both terms refer to learning and development initiatives, they have different focuses:

After any crisis passes, organizations shouldn't abandon their reskilling initiatives; instead, they should use the talent reskilling and redeployment they're already doing to expand their reskilling capabilities in the future. (Agrawal, 2020)

HR needs to devise a clear reskilling/ upskilling strategy which includes:

  • Design and support development plans
  • Provide job specific reskilling/upskilling programs and learning technologies
  • Provide time during workday for employees to reskill/upskill themselves.

Advantages Of Reskilling And Upskilling

  1. Definitely true. Organizations need skilled talent to meet market demands. Market circumstances, technologies and organizational requirements evolve, the skills required to perform the tasks at hand will require changes too. This has happened due to globalization and technology advancements such as Artificial intelligence and machine learning in various industry applications. E.g. Currently, receptionist roles are there. In the future, these roles may be not there because of introduction of AI and Machine Learning. Therefore, current receptionists may need to be reskilled and upskilled to abreast with industry changes because of the technology advancements. Therefore, organizations will have to provide sufficient learning opportunities. Otherwise, there is the risk of businesses employing them becoming obsolete and not value-enhancing resources to the organizations (Hall, 2023).

  2. Yes Jasothan, instead of being one time activity, employee reskilling/upskilling should be an ongoing process that meet needs of job roles & industries. It promotes employee engagement, retention & organizational adaptability to changing circumstances as I have aforementioned

  3. Do you think reskilling/ upskilling are practiced in SL? I feel that with the current crisis these are not looked into as much as it should. You see downsizing and restructuring happen however I feel there is very little reskilling/ upskilling happening.
